Girls’ track team gets first win of the season

By

The Canton High girls’ track team had a good week with its first league win — 70-66 over Attleboro — and a strong showing at the State Relays held in Stoneham last weekend. The boys’ team also had a good showing at the State Relays, but fell 94-42 in the Attleboro meet.

Vicky Tondre was one of the leading point scorers against Attleboro, as she won three events: the 100-meter dash, the 200, and the triple jump. Radiya Buchanan won the high jump and placed second in the 400 and the triple jump.

Senior Sara Teague

Rachel Campagna placed second in the 100 and third in the long jump; Chidimma Nwankwo finished second in the shot put and first in the discus; Mellyn Costello was second in the 200, first in the 100-meter hurdles, and second in the long jump.

Other highlights included: Lauren Berman, first, mile; Kate D’Orazio, second, 400-meter hurdles; Michaela Kelly, third, 400; Sarah Teague, second, 800; Haley Gaughan, third, 800; Rachel McHugh, third, javelin; and Stephanie Mui, third, high jump.

Freshman Ellie Teague picked up her first points of the year with a third place in the 100 hurdles, and Kristina Stuopis recorded her first points with a third place in the two mile. CHS also had a winning relay team in the 4×400 behind Avery Devoe, D’Orazio, Berman, and Michaela Kelly.

“Things are starting to come together, and the kids’ hard work is paying off,” girls’ coach Ben Mattson said. “Not only are they getting in great physical shape at this point in the season, but they are gaining confidence in their performances and their drive is showing up on the track.”

At the State Relays the Bulldogs had two outstanding teams: the long jump and triple jump. Participating in the winning long jump relay were Buchanan, Tondre and Costello. The triple jump relay placed second overall behind Buchanan, Tondre and Campagna.

Boys’ results

The boys’ high jump and two sprint relays performed well at the State Relays. Matt Sidney returned from an injury to lead the gold-medal- winning high jump relay, aided by Chris Boughter and Jared Hobbs.

The sprint medley placed sixth behind Obi Nwankwo, Jon Vaughn, Boughter and Cam Huber. The 4×100 relay team of Vaughn, Alex Chery, Evan Feldman and Derek Seto qualified for the states.

Junior Cam Huber

Despite falling to Attleboro, coach Brian Conroy said the Bulldogs had several strong performances.

Vaughn ran a 10.7 in the 100 meters — his fastest time this season. He also ran a very fast 200 with a state-qualifying time of 22.2 seconds and placed third in the long jump at 18 feet, nine inches. Nwankwo, a sophomore, won the 400 with a personal-best, state-qualifying time of 52.2 seconds.

Also qualifying for the state meet were Huber in the 800 (2:03.4) and Hobbs, who placed third in the high jump at five feet, 10 inches. Hobbs also placed third in the triple jump at 39 feet, one and a half inches.

Tom Kerikas had a multiple-point day, placing second in the 400-meter hurdles (61.5 seconds) and in the 100-meter hurdles (15.8 seconds).

Other point scorers in the loss to Attleboro were: Chris Haidul, third, 400-meter hurdles, 63.9 seconds; Jake Fruci, first, one-mile run, 4:49; Mike Bronstein, second, two-mile run; Jim Grella, third, discus, 97 feet, four inches; and Julian Malbranche, third, javelin, 132 feet, one inch.

Both teams were scheduled to host Stoughton on May 3 and will send athletes to this weekend’s state freshmen/sophomore meet.
