The CHS baseball team is beginning to show considerable improvement with two wins last week over Hockomock League opponents, many competitive games and an overall record of 3-6.

Late last week, Canton beat Stoughton 6-3 as Michael Hallett pitched a complete game for his first win and Drew Blake knocked in four runs.

Earlier in the week, Canton edged King Philip 7-6 as sophomore pitcher Jim Fitzgerald recorded his first win. The Bulldogs jumped out first as Matt Potts singled in a run with the bases loaded and another single by Andrew Vinciguerra scored another two runs.

With the score tied at 3-3, Canton had a big inning to take a 6-3 lead. Matt Nichols knocked in a run with an RBI single. Chris Cammaratta singled in another run and an error brought in another run to make the score 6-3.

In the third inning, the Bulldogs pulled off a squeeze with Vinciguerra at third and Cammaratta at the plate. The successful squeeze put the Bulldogs up 7-4. Hallett relieved Fitzgerald and pitched the fifth, sixth, and seventh to close the game.

The Bulldogs almost upset North Attleboro but fell 10-8. Starter Matt Bernstein pitched well before leaving the game in the fifth inning with a shoulder injury. After that point, Canton let up defensively and a few errors allowed NA to take the lead for good in the final inning.

In other action, Canton fell to Oliver Ames 7-3 despite a good pitching effort by TJ Duggan, who kept the game close for five innings. Vinciguerra had three hits and Nichols and Nickel each had two hits.

In a 9-7 loss to Foxboro, Canton had the lead 7-5 in the fourth as Blake had an RBI single and a two-run home run in the second. Foxboro came back to win the game in the seventh inning.

As of earlier last week, Potts led the team in batting average at .444 followed by Nickel at .363, Cammaratta at .353, Nichols, Vinciguerra and T.J. Duggan at .333.

Fitzgerald, Bernstein, and Hallett all have single wins as pitchers. This week’s busy schedule called for home games May 2 against Attleboro and May 3 against Mansfield, at Franklin on May 4, at Sharon May 9, and home against Foxboro on Wednesday, May 11.
