Carter, Daniel E.
By Canton CitizenDaniel E. Carter, 80, of Canton, passed away on September 27, 2026. Dan was born in Glenwood Springs, CO, in 1946 to Eugene and Sally Carter and moved to Dorchester, MA, at an early age.
In 1959 the Carters relocated to Canton. Dan was a 1964 graduate of Canton High School. After attending the UMass Stockbridge School of Agriculture, Dan enlisted in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany he married his high school sweetheart, Ellen. Following his honorable discharge, Dan worked for Cumberland Farms before working for the town of Canton as the first caretaker of Pequitside Farm. In 1980 Dan and Ellen started D.E. Carter Landscaping, running it until his retirement.
Dan’s happiest moments were those spent outdoors. He took every opportunity to be outside from the mountains of Maine to the outer beaches of Cape Cod. Dan was a longtime member of Canton Fish and Game, Sharon Fish and Game, and the Independent Sportsman’s Club, building many valued friendships at those clubs. He was also blessed to have many friends from the Parker Gun Collectors Association. He was known for sharing many lessons in life through storytelling and was an avid reader.
Dan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellen (Cohen) Carter, of Canton, his sons Gene Carter and his wife, Jennifer, of Stoughton and Richard Carter and his wife, Jill, of Canton. His grandchildren and greatest joys were Lauren Carter of South Carolina, Allison Carter of Norton, and Harrison and Thomas Carter of Canton. His family included his cousins Gregory Mazmanian and his wife, Irene, of Falmouth and Christine Corff and her husband, George, of Sterling, and his in-laws Ann and Bob Adams of Norwood, Kathryn and Jon Springer of Florida, Bob and Michelle Cohen of Canton, and Jan and the late William Cohen of Canton. Dan was the proud uncle to many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the team at Dana-Farber, including Dr. Daniel Roberts, Kayla McCarthy, PA-C, and Melinda Esposito, BSN RN.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home on Friday, October 2, from 4-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, October 3, at 10:30 a.m. Burial at Canton Corner Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dana-Farber or HopeHealth Hospice.
