Bulldog wrestlers Sullivan, DiCalogero off to fast start
By Jay TurnerThe Canton High wrestling team kicked off the 2013-14 season with a busy two-week stretch prior to Christmas, opening with a 3-5 team record as well as several impressive individual performances.
The Bulldogs’ top two wrestlers thus far have been senior Chris Sullivan and junior Rob DiCalogero, who both entered Sunday’s Lowell Holiday Tournament with a perfect 8-0 record. Sullivan, one of the most decorated wrestlers in CHS history, is gunning for another state title after winning one as a sophomore and finishing second last year as a junior. DiCalogero, meanwhile, is poised for a breakout campaign after finishing second last season at sectionals and eighth overall at states.
Other top performers for Canton include Brendan Lewis, who opened with a 4-0 showing at the Bristol Aggie dual tournament, and Waleed Chakir, who went 3-0 at the Hingham quad meet on Saturday, December 21. Several others are off to promising starts as well, including Mike Reese, Max Platt, Courtland Priest, Steili Dandis, and Wavol Prentice.
As a team, the Bulldogs own victories over Hanover (42-42, won tiebreaker), Bristol Aggie (53-17) and North Quincy (48-6). They have lost to Wakefield, Sabis, North Attleboro, Hingham and Walpole.
This past weekend, the team sent a contingent to the Lowell tournament, an annual Canton wrestling tradition. On Thursday, the Bulldogs will travel to Mansfield to take on the Hornets, followed by a home quad meet this Saturday at 10 a.m. featuring Northbridge, Scituate and Xaverian Brothers. The team then heads to Milford on January 8 before returning to the Masciarelli Gym to host the Peckham Tournament on Saturday, January 11.
