Baseball team falls to Fairhaven in tourney opener
By Mike BergerA 2-0 loss to Fairhaven in the preliminary round of the playoffs last Friday ended the CHS baseball season, as the Blue Devils had just enough offense to spoil a well-pitched game by promising sophomore Sam Larson.
Canton (7-14) was seeded 18th out of 19 teams in the Division 3 south sectional bracket, while Fairhaven was seeded 10th with a record of 10-10.
Larson made his only mistake after five innings of three-hit baseball when rival pitcher Ryan Baldwin hit a solo homerun leading off the sixth inning. The Blue Devils then tacked on an insurance run thanks to two Canton errors and a base hit.
Baldwin, who is Fairhaven’s best pitcher with a 6-3 record, allowed just three hits over sixth innings while striking out eight and walking one batter.
Larson finished the game with four strikeouts and ended the seaon at 5-1 with 43 strikeouts and an earned run average of 1.86, according to head coach Junior Medina.
The Bulldogs had picked up their seventh and final win of the season over King Philip (3-1) just before the Memorial Day weekend. Larson pitched a complete game, hurling seven innings, striking out two and allowing six hits.
In that game, Canton scored two runs in the second inning, including one by Jimmy Fitzgerald, who led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Cammarata, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Steve Mullaney. Drew Blake then hit a single to drive in Larson, who had walked. In the seventh inning, Blake led off with a single, then stole second base, and scored on a base hit by Matt Potts to take a 3-1 lead.
Although the season is over, many members of the team will now be playing this summer for the Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team, which begins its season at home on Saturday, June 9, at 5 p.m. Making the Legion team were Larson, Fitzgerald, Blake, Potts, Mullaney, Cammarata, Kyle Delsignore, Liam Murphy, Justin Rudy, Ian Flavin, and Kevin O’Brien.
