In anticipation of a final sign-off from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Canton Board of Health has tentatively scheduled two COVID-19 Pfizer vaccination clinics for kids ages 5-11.

The clinics have been penciled in for this Sunday, November 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday, November 10, from 5-7 p.m. Both will take place in the Canton High School cafeteria and pre-registration will be required. Sign-ups, pending final approval, will be made available on the Canton BOH website or via direct link at home.color.com/vaccine/register/canton.

The announcement by the Board of Health comes after the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, made up of vaccine and immune system experts from across the country, voted unanimously on Tuesday to recommend giving Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to elementary school-aged children (5-11). The decision now rests with CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, who is widely expected to approve the recommendation.

According to Barbara Reardon, Canton’s director of public health, the Health Department already had 300 vaccine doses ready to go and hundreds more have been ordered. Additional Pfizer clinics for ages 5-11 will be scheduled as the vaccine is received, she said.

The Board of Health is also continuing to schedule Moderna COVID booster clinics. To pre-register for an appointment, visit the link above or go to the Board of Health page on the town website.

Under current Massachusetts eligibility guidelines, individuals who initially received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine are eligible for a booster dose six months after their second shot if they are 65+, or 18+ and live in a long-term care setting, have an underlying medical condition, or live or work in a high-risk settings. Those who initially received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can receive a booster if they are 18+ and received their initial dose at least two months prior.

Residents can determine if they are eligible for a booster by utilizing the COVID-19 booster eligibility checker at mass.gov/covid-19-vaccine. More information about higher risk occupations and institutional settings can be found at mass.gov/CDCWorkLive.
