MAC: Welcome to Canton, Mr. Turcotte

By

Did you know …

Congratulations to Canton’s new high school principal, David Turcotte, who was selected by Canton School Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller. Mr. Turcotte will replace Derek Folan, who is moving into the role as the assistant superintendent for teaching and learning. Mr. Turcotte was the dean of students at Newton North High School for the past eight years. He has a BA in sociology and anthropology from Carleton College in Minnesota, an MEd in special education from UMass Boston, and a CAGS in educational policy, planning, and administration from Boston University. Turcotte has assumed the position as CHS principal effective July 1, 2020. MAC wishes him the very best in his new Canton position.

Dale Rushworth, the popular secretary for the Canton Council on Aging, retired on June 23 after 22 years of service at the Canton Senior Center. (Click here for story.)

The final tally for the 2020 annual Canton town election had Chris Connolly topping the selectmen race with 2,468 votes. Lisa Lopez captured the second open seat by only seven votes over Tom Theodore, 2,250 to 2,243. Joe Amrhein pulled in 344 votes. There were 4,235 ballots cast, which is approximately 25 percent of the total eligible voters in Canton.

Many cities and towns, including Canton, are canceling their Fourth of July celebrations because of the coronavirus.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the dog days of summer are traditionally the 40 days beginning on July 3 and ending August 11, which coincides with the dawn rising of Sirius, the dog star. This is soon after the summer solstice, which of course also indicates that heat will soon set in.

Catalytic converters are a hot thing to steal, and they go missing from thousands of vehicles every year. Why? Because they contain precious metals, and thieves sell them to scrap dealers for anywhere from $20 to $240, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. Thefts have been reported in several municipalities around greater Boston recently. In Canton, a company reported that a number of catalytic converters were cut out from parked buses.

According to an article in the Boston Globe, Red Sox owner and publisher John Henry is the sixth richest owner in Major League Baseball with a personal wealth of $2.7 billion.

According to a post on the Facebook group “Everything Canton MA,” the new sidewalk on Revere Street that juts out as you turn onto Revere Street from Washington Street is a disaster. Why was this approved at a slight curve? It’s not even well lit so it’s very difficult to see. This is terrible planning, and it’s not going to be safe for pedestrians. Some assume that it was designed that way to stop people from parking along Revere Street and/or to force cars approaching the new Revere Heritage Site to slow down. MAC wonders how many vehicles have already hit that dangerous bump out into Revere Street.

Talking about Everything Canton MA, Sam Ryan created the Facebook page on July 20, 2014, and it now has over 10,000 members.

The Massachusetts Senate is made up of 36 Democrats and only four Republicans. The House membership includes 125 Democrats, 31 Republicans, and one unenrolled.

The House recently passed, by a vote of 155-1, a bill that would direct Secretary of State Bill Galvin to send applications for a “mail-in ballot” to every registered voter by July 15 for the September 1 primary and by September 14 for the November 3 general election. If approved by the Senate and signed by the governor, applications for mail-in ballots will be sent to all 4.5 million registered voters in Massachusetts.

House lawmakers recently voted 156-0 to help revive and stimulate the restaurant industry by allowing them to sell “to-go cocktails” in sealed containers, along with the existing take-out beer and wine service. The measure defines mixed drinks as a “drink sealed in a container holding up to 64 fluid ounces of liquor and mixer that have been combined.”
