The Canton American Legion Post 24 is holding its annual Duffers Golf Tournament on Monday, May 21, at Wampatuck Country Club. The money raised will be used for scholarships for Canton students. The tournament will feature five-person teams with a maximum of 18 teams and an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Cost per person is $110. For more information, call 781-828-9766.

The Canton American Legion motorcycle riders will be hosting the eighth annual Tony Andreotti Motorcycle Run on Sunday, June 3, starting at 12 noon. Cost per rider is $20; all others are $15. Proceeds from the run will benefit local veterans.

With Memorial Day in a few weeks, legionnaire Henry Krueger and his crew will again be placing American flags on highway overpasses near Canton’s town borders. Those flags are placed there to honor our country, our freedom, our veterans, and our servicemen and women around the world.

The Legionnaires will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, June 16, from 8 p.m. to midnight featuring the popular duet AM Station at the Legion Hall behind Canton High School. Cost is only $5 per person.

This year, the Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team will again be coached by Greg Lyons and his assistants Walter Mann and Al Jackson. Last year, the team made it all the way to the district semifinals before losing a heartbreaker to Quincy 10-9 in nine innings. The semifinal finish was the furthest a Post 24 team has ever advanced.

The Legion contributes to the baseball team, and after coming up a little short this year, former Commander Fred Gladstone offered to donate, out of his own pocket, the $2,000 that was necessary to fund the baseball season. Kudos to Fred!

Canton’s American Legion Edward J. Beatty Post 24 celebration was another outstanding affair led by Canton Veterans Agent Tony Andreotti. On Sunday, April 22, a monument was dedicated to the Canton American Legion memorializing all of Canton’s deceased servicemen and women, regardless of their final resting place. The new monument was placed at the Veterans Memorial Park at Canton Corner Cemetery.

The Boston Red Sox have the top payroll in the major leagues at approximately $223 million. San Francisco is second at $203 million while the New York Yankees have dropped to baseball’s seventh highest payroll at $167 million, their lowest ranking since 1992.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is the highest paid Major League Baseball player, raking in $35.8 million a year (which includes $2.5 million in endorsements).

The average salary of a professional baseball player in 2018 is $4.45 million per year.

Selectmen recently appointed Ryan Gurley as a new Canton firefighter.

Robert Barker is the chairman of the Canton Finance Committee while Tim McKenna is the vice chairman.

Per the annual town meeting, several streets will be accepted as “public ways.” Some of these streets will need additional funds from the town to perform or complete work the developer neglected to do. The residents on the streets will be assessed a “street betterment” fee to reimburse the town for incurring these costs.

Boston Property Ventures plans to build a 52-bed detox center just outside Quincy Center.

The News Stand at 719 Washington Street, which remains closed, will have its wine and malt package store license revoked. The selectmen have notified the State Alcohol Beverage Commission and have asked them to open a new wine and malt package store license.

In case you missed it, marijuana is now legal in Massachusetts. July 1 is the date that recreational facilities will legally be open for business in Massachusetts. There are already 24 registered medical marijuana dispensaries currently open in Massachusetts.

The answer to old age is to keep one’s mind busy and to go on with one’s life as if it were interminable.
