Man About Canton: Dunkin’ Tax Break

By

Did you know …

Dunkin’ Brands Group, the corporate parent of Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins brands, is asking the town of Canton to extend the current 10-year tax increment financing deal for five years. The tax break, which will need town meeting approval, would reduce the annual property tax payments by 20 percent. The company’s headquarters at 130 Royall Street is owned by Boston-based H.N. Gorin Company. Dunkin’ has been at this location since 2004 and has paid $350,000 to $400,000 annually in taxes to the town. According to Gene Manning, Canton’s Economic Development Committee chairman, Dunkin’ has been courted by the University Station complex in Westwood. The Canton Board of Selectmen and the Board of Assessors voted to support the recommendations with the condition that it leads to a 15-year lease.

On a sad note, Margaret Pellegrini, one of the original Munchkins from the 1939 classic movie The Wizard of Oz, recently died at the age of 89. Ms. Pellegrini was 16 when she played one of the “sleepy head” munchkins and wore a flowerpot on her head in the movie. With her death, only two of the original 124 munchkins in the movie are still alive.
