The ninth annual Reebok/Canton Road Race will be held on Saturday, October 5, starting and ending at the Reebok campus off Royal Street in Canton. This year’s race, which has a 7:30 a.m. registration time, will feature a 5k and a 10k; a wheelchair race; a one-mile fun run for children under 13; a 10k fitness challenge for local health clubs and a 5k corporate challenge race. Runners can also register at www.cantonroadrace.org. The cost of the 5k and 10k races is $25 per runner online; $30 per runner on race day; and $20 for students. Talking about road races, 115 Cantonites ran in the 41st annual seven-mile Falmouth Road Race on Sunday, August 11. Jordan Cafourek, age 33, was the top Canton finisher at 46:48, while Courtney Loughnane, age 17, was the first Canton women’s finisher in 57:33.

The Boston Half Marathon will hold its 13th annual race on Sunday, October 13. It took less than 15 minutes to register the maximum of 7,500 runners. The event is the last in this year’s Boston Athletic Association’s three-race distance medley.

The average age of the 247 million cars and trucks on U.S. roads hit a record of 11.4 years, according to recent research from state registration data.

The average annual homeowner’s cost of water in the town of Canton is $647. The average daily usage in gallons per person was estimated at 66, according to the Massachusetts Environmental Protection Agency.

Talking about tap water, both tap water and bottled water have to meet the same standards; in fact, tap water must meet more intensive EPA testing requirements. Yet tap water costs less than a penny per gallon delivered straight to your home, while bottled water can cost between $1 and $8 a gallon.

The state is still matching 26 cents on the dollar for towns that have approved the Community Preservation Act. It is estimated that the town of Canton will have about $480,000 at its disposal at the end of fiscal year 2014 from the 1 percent surcharge on the annual real estate tax levy for both commercial and residential properties. The monies will be put into a reserve fund until the Community Preservation Committee brings projects to the town meeting for approval.

The Canton Council on Aging will sponsor a trip to Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island, on Tuesday, September 24. The Canton Blue Hills Civic Association will hold its 30th annual Citizen of the Year dinner meeting on Monday, September 9, at the Canton Town Club. The civic will honor former Canton Fire Chief Jim Fitzpatrick with the “Dr. Richard Elkort” Canton Citizen of the Year Award. As required by Massachusetts General Laws, the NStar Electric and Gas Company has notified the town of Canton that it intends to apply herbicides along the length of their right of way. The treatment period will extend from August 19 to December 31, 2013.

Fred Gladstone was recently elected as the Canton American Legion Post 24 commander. The American Legion Auxiliary president is Michelle Mogan.

On September 22, the Canton Legion Riders Group will be holding a charity 35-mile motorcycle run to raise money for the Canton Veterans Department.
