All three losses came against teams in the Davenport Division — Sharon on Monday, Foxboro on Wednesday, and Stoughton on Friday — and all three were closer than the final score suggested.

In the first game at Sharon, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead and were clinging to a 2-2 tie entering the fifth inning when the Eagles exploded for eight runs to effectively put the game out of reach.

Senior Angelina Salcedo was responsible for the fast start as she knocked home Emily Lanci, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and then stole second.

Two days later, the Bulldogs traveled to Foxboro and were soundly defeated, surrendering ten runs in one inning en route to a 14-0 loss. The girls had their chances offensively, but they struggled to move runners and stranded seven on base.

They had a similar problem on Friday against Stoughton; however, the Bulldog bats looked considerably sharper overall, highlighted by multiple-hit games from Brittany Ferzoco, Sam Sullivan, Lanci and Salcedo.

After falling behind 4-0, Canton came all the way back to take a 5-4 lead behind Ferzoco’s RBI triple. Unfortunately, the Black Knights countered with five runs of their own in the seventh to pull out a 10-5 win.

For head coach Ed Amico, last week’s 0-3 stretch only reaffirmed his feeling that the girls need to learn how to play “seven innings of softball” and avoid taking an “inning or two off,” as they have been prone to do so far this season.

“Although the losses have been tough on the team, they understand that if they play seven, they can play with and be competitive with any team they face,” said Amico.

The good news, he said, is that the girls are playing hard every game and are determined to right the ship. They had their plate full this week, with games against Taunton and King Philip, plus another one next week against No. 1 Milford, yet Amico believes they have lots of room to grow and could possibly surprise a team or two over the second half of the season.

“Although the schedule is quite competitive,” he said, “they are coming into every game with an enthusiasm that I as a coach love to see, and they are setting the stage for the program for years to come as many of the younger players are getting invaluable experience.”
