Fresh off its biggest win of the season against rival Franklin, the CHS boys’ ice hockey team stayed red-hot with two more league victories against Milford and Oliver Ames last week, improving to 8-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Hockomock League.

While the rest of the Davenport Division continues to stumble, the Bulldogs are clearly headed in the opposite direction, having now won five games in a row and six of their last seven.

In fact, the last time the team lost was back on January 2 at Oliver Ames in what was technically a non-league game. At the time the Tigers were leading the division and held on for a 1-0 win behind their talented freshman goaltender.

“This kid is probably the best goalie in the league,” head coach Brian Shuman said of the Tigers’ Jimmy Tierney. “He’s outstanding.”

However, in Saturday’s rematch at Metropolis Rink, the Bulldogs were able to put up two quick goals in the opening period — one by sophomore Brian Hagan off a pass from Ben Lodge, and the other by senior captain Pat Ward off a shot by JC Marcone.

The latter goal broke a one-all tie, and it gave the Bulldogs some much-needed momentum that they carried into the second period. And while they didn’t score in the frame, they dominated the puck and outshot the Tigers 11-2, setting up an “exciting third period,” according to Shuman.

Shuman said the final period was sloppy at times, but it featured several big saves from senior goalie Rich Nee, who helped keep OA off the board for good. Junior Brian Brooks would then add a late goal at the five-minute mark to seal the victory for Canton — the team’s first against OA since the 2010-11 season.

Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs traveled to Milford, where they earned a convincing 7-0 win against the Davenport Division’s newest member. Shuman was unable to attend the game, but it was all Canton from start to finish as seven different players got on the scoreboard: Lodge, Ward, John Femia, Mike Denehy, Justin Rudy, Kurt Leavitt, and Jake Paschal, who picked up the first goal of his varsity career.

This week, the Bulldogs were due to play two at home, including a nonleague game on Wednesday versus Bridgewater Raynham and a Saturday matinee against Foxboro beginning at 4 p.m.
