Man About Canton: Affordable Housing Statistics

By

DID YOU KNOW …

MAC recently listed the percentage of condos and apartments in Canton against single family housing at over 22 percent. It is interesting to note that out of the 22 percent, over 10 percent of the housing units are subsidized under Chapter 40B, the Massachusetts Affordable Housing Bylaw. In neighboring towns, Stoughton tops the list at almost 14 percent, while Sharon is at 7 percent and Norwood is under 6 percent. The state average is only 4.7 percent.

MAC would like to personally congratulate Meredith Carey on her promotion as the new assistant principal at the Galvin Middle School. Meredith was the interim assistant principal at the Kennedy School last year. Ten years ago, when Meredith was in college, she worked part-time as a toll collector with MAC at the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority.

The Canton School Committee approved a user fee of $50, with a family cap of $250, for all extracurricular clubs and activities.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern New England recently presented a $20,000 grant to the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton to help fund the expansion of their outdoor sports track to make it wheelchair-accessible for races and summer camp programs.

One of MAC’s readers is asking the following question of the Canton High School administration: Why are Canton High School seniors and their families hassled by the school administration to sit for senior pictures when many have already purchased them privately during the summer? They are required to pay a sitting fee, interrupt their day, and pay for the return proofs they did not want in the first place. Whatever the likely “fiscal” excuse, it doesn’t make sense to waste time and resources this way. The reader is looking for an answer from the administration.

Canton selectmen recently appointed former Sharon firefighter Patrick McGovern as a firefighter/paramedic in Canton.

Rent in Boston isn’t the only room fare on the rise. According to a report by the Boston Business Journal, hotel room costs saw a 3.3 percent increase over the last month and now average $215.74 per night.

The Canton High School football team started out on the right foot as they beat Weston 35-14, avenging last year’s 35-7 loss. The Bulldogs were led by quarterback Anthony Bires, who threw for a pair of touchdowns, a 38 yarder and a 50 yarder to receiver Elias Camacho. Bires also scored on a five-yard keeper. CHS made it two straight wins as they next beat Quincy 26-12 with Dexter Green scoring three touchdowns. Last year, the Bulldogs’ record was 0-10-1.

Stoughton High School head football coach Greg Burke has been at the helm for 21 seasons. Stoughton has beaten Canton on Thanksgiving Day six straight times and 14 of the last 16 times that the teams have met.

Vincent Burton of the Blue Hills High School football team in Canton started out the year rushing for 152 yards and three touchdowns in a 24-0 win over East Boston. Burton followed up his first week with a staggering 48 carries for 276 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Warriors past Case High School 38-14. Last year, as a sophomore, Burton rushed for 1,549 yards and led Division 4 with 30 touchdowns and 202 points, earning him Player of the Year honors from the Boston Globe.

Don’t measure yourself by what you have accomplished but by what you should have accomplished with your ability.

This is all for now folks. See you next week.
