Girls’ lax beats Foxboro but can’t stop Cohasset

Nearing the end of the season, the Canton High girls’ lacrosse team finished the week with a mixed bag: an impressive 21-14 win over Foxboro and a difficult 23-19 loss to Cohasset.

The Bulldogs came out quick in the game against Foxboro, scoring in the first minutes of the game. But as soon as the girls had amassed a lead, they lost it with three unanswered goals from Foxboro.

“So we got together and called a timeout, and discussed how again ball control on the draws was our biggest culprit,” coach Chris Murtagh said. “Once we started controlling the draws, we controlled the momentum of the game.”

Meghan Lennon finished as the team’s top scorer with six goals. Other scorers included Meaghan McKenna, Michelle McNeil and Emma Compagna with four goals each, Sarah Healey with two and Kaitlin Phillips with one.

The girls entered the game against South Shore powerhouse Cohasset knowing they would face tough competition. At the beginning of the first half, it looked like Cohasset would run away with the easy win, but Canton managed to shift the momentum and tied up the score 7-7. Still, the girls struggled to keep up with the Skippers and ended the first half behind 12-7. The Bulldogs rallied in the second half with 12 more goals, but still fell short.

Lennon again led the team with seven goals, followed by McNeil with five. McKenna and Jacki Merrigan netted two goals each while Healey, Compagna and Emma Martin finished the game with one goal.

“It might have not been a victory in the scorebook,” Murtagh said. “But it was a big moral victory. We opened a lot of people’s eyes to what Canton lacrosse is capable of.”
