Another tough week for Bulldog softball team

By

Despite suffering three tough losses last week — 4-2 against Attleboro, 9-0 against Mansfield and 6-5 at Franklin — the Canton High varsity softball team showed offensive improvement with 25 hits over the three games.

Senior Olivia Kenyon

Coach Ed Amico said the team’s downfall came with stranding runners on base and making errors. In the game against Attleboro, errors accounted for three of the four runs allowed. Olivia Murphy, Julia Murphy and Olivia Kenyon all had multiple-hit games. Julia Murphy scored off a hit by Sam Sullivan and Olivia Murphy was driven in by Cady Kelly.

The game against Franklin seemed more promising when the Bulldogs came out with a quick 5-1 lead. Again, errors plagued the team, and the girls ended up losing 6-5, giving up three runs in the last inning. The Bulldogs still managed to finish the game with 12 hits. All nine starters reached base at least once during the game, while Kenyon, Julia Murphy, Erin Russell, Becky Lazaro and Colleen Myers each scored a run. Kelly had two RBIs while Lazaro, Olivia Murphy and Julia Murphy finished with one RBI apiece.

With the continued, gradual improvement, Amico said he and the girls are confident they will perform well in the final six games of the season, five of which are against teams the Bulldogs lost to earlier in the season.

“The key in these next games will be for the girls to play the way they are capable of for seven innings, continuing the solid hitting and minimizing errors on defense,” Amico said.

The Bulldogs (1-11) were scheduled to play Monday at Sharon and Wednesday at home versus Foxboro. Their next game is May 16 at Boston Latin Academy, a team they have already beaten once this season.
