Girls’ tennis team peaking at the right time

The Canton High girls’ tennis team surged to an overall record of 7-4 after a 2-0 week, buoyed by great play and weak opponents.

Monday saw Canton play Attleboro High School for the first time in school history. The victory was quick, with all CHS players dominating in their individual matches. Erika Nannery continued her reign of supremacy with a 6-0, 6-0 win while her sister Michaela wiped out Attleboro’s second singles player at 6-1, 6-1. The Nannery sisters have been a dominant force on the court this season, playing remarkably well against even the toughest competition.

Despite being a freshman in the toughest spot in the lineup, Erika has only lost one match out of 11. In total, she has played 160 games, dropping just 36 games and two sets (both against Foxboro’s two-time Hockomock MVP). Amazingly, she has won 77.5 percent of her games.

Junior Michaela is in the midst of her own stellar career at CHS. This season, she has played 175 games, dropping just 47. With just two losses, Michaela has won a similarly incredible 73 percent of her games.

The rest of the team kept pace with the sisters, all contributing to the 5-0 win over Attleboro. Alice Bronsteyn easily won third singles with a quick 6-0, 6-1. First doubles saw the pairing of Eleni Papadopoulous and Aimee Pina beat their opponents 6-1, 6-2. Canton’s second pair of sisters, freshman Pranathi Ganni and sophomore Pujitha, won the second doubles match at 6-3, 6-1.

Coach Sheila Conneely is trying to best protect the second doubles spot, so far the Bulldogs’ Achilles heel. “I hope that sister tandem will prove a beneficial fusion for us,” she said.

The Bulldogs managed to put away their Franklin opponents on Thursday before the matches were called off for rain. Erika Nannery won first singles 6-1, 6-2, while Michaela won her match 6-1, 6-1. Bronsteyn was in the middle of a potential three-set match when the rain started to fall, finishing her play at 6-4, 4-5. Papadopoulous and Pina secured the win at first doubles, 6-3, 6-1. Second doubles Pujitha and Pranathi Ganni fell 0-6, 3-6.

Conneely made special mention of Bronsteyn, who moved into third singles early in the season.

“Alice has the potential to be a very solid third singles players,” Conneely noted. “She is consistent.” Added the coach, “She is a back board and willing and able to run down any ball. Alice has a strong work ethic and is very coachable. I’ve noticed improvement in her singles play in each of the matches.”

The team continues to thrive overall and looks to close out its final four matches in a winning fashion.
