The Canton High School softball team finished the first half of the season with three difficult losses: 5-0 against both King Philip and Oliver Ames and 11-6 against Stoughton.

Despite failing to get a hit against KP, coach Ed Amico said the girls played their best defensive game of the season. The Bulldogs gave up three quick unearned runs in the first inning, but settled down and proved a worthy adversary, giving up just two more runs over six innings against the defending Division 1 state champs.

After becoming the third team to go hitless against KP this season, Canton bounced back against Oliver Ames with hits by Julia Murphy, Olivia Murphy, Sam Sullivan and Cady Kelly. The Bulldogs’ downfall proved to be errors and walks, which accounted for four of the five runs.

Canton had similar difficulty with defense in the game against Stoughton, digging itself into an early 10-0 hole. The girls managed to rally back with six runs, but still fell short of a win after leaving nine runners stranded on base.

“The team has progressed with many players elevating their game,” Amico said while reflecting on the first half of the season. “Being consistent will be the key for the second half. The ability is there to string together a bunch of second half wins.”
