Girls’ tennis closes out week with back-to-back shutouts

The CHS girls’ tennis team went 2-1 last week with a pair of impressive 5-0 shutouts, tipping its season record over the .500 mark to 5-4.

The Bulldogs started things off at King Philip, against a team that coach Sheila Conneely deemed the “powerhouse in the league for the past five years.” The Nannery sisters once again owned their matches, easily taking out KP in straight sets. Freshman Erika won first singles at 6-1, 6-2, while junior Michaela won hers 6-1, 6-1.

Sophomore Aimee Pina (1st doubles)

The rest of the lineup had a more difficult time. Sophomore Alice Bronsteyn lost third singles 6-0, 6-2. First doubles pair Eleni Papadopoulous and Aimee Pina, both sophomores, also were overwhelmed, losing 6-3, 6-2. The match came down to second doubles partners Pranathi Ganni, a freshman, and Kristen Burns, a sophomore. Chances of a win looked good for the first one and a half sets, with Canton up 6-4, 4-2. Unwilling to suffer a loss, KP came back to win a second-set tiebreak, followed by a 6-4 third set.

Wednesday’s match brought some relief to the Bulldogs when they faced Oliver Ames. Erika and Michaela Nannery sailed past their opponents at first and second singles, both winning 6-0, 6-0. Bronsteyn won a similarly decisive match, knocking out her third singles opponent 6-0, 6-4. Papadopoulous and Pina reasserted themselves as a strong first doubles pair, winning 6-3, 6-2. Ganni and Burns faced slightly stiffer competition at second doubles, but came out on top with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win.

Rounding out the week was Stoughton, who fell fast to Canton. Erika Nannery defeated Stoughton’s top player 6-0, 6-1. Michaela wiped out second singles with 6-0, 6-0. Bronsteyn also scored a bagel, crushing Stoughton’s third singles player in a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win. First doubles won 6-2, 6-0. Sophomores Pujitha Ganni (sister of Prananthi) and Jude Altabaa played second doubles. Once again, the match became a nail biter in the second set tiebreak, but the Bulldogs kept the Knights at bay and won, giving Canton its second 5-0 win in as many days.

The Bulldogs are hoping to keep the streak alive at this week’s matches in Attleboro and Franklin.
