CHS girls’ hockey team drops finale; readies for postseason

By

Despite impressive game play, the Canton High girls’ hockey team came up short in a difficult 2-1 loss to Walpole (14-4-2) to finish the regular season with an 11-6-3 record.

“Going into the game we knew it would be competitive and saw similarities between the two teams,” coach Kelly Rider said.

Canton started off strong and forced Walpole to play defensively. Meaghan McKenna netted a goal midway through the first period to give the Bulldogs the quick lead. Walpole came back in the second, however, and scored its first goal.

“The rest of the game from that point was up and down where both teams were able to control the puck for a good amount of time,” Rider said.

The Rebels pulled ahead in the third period with a second goal, and despite multiple attempts, Canton couldn’t seem to land the puck between the goal posts.

Despite the difficult end-of-season loss, Rider said she’s excited about the MIAA tournament, which kicked off earlier this week.

“Last year we were the number-one seed, but that came with a lot of pressure and expectations,” she said. “Hopefully, this year we can fly under the radar a little bit and surprise some teams early on in the tournament.”

The Bulldogs, seeded tenth in the 18-team Division 2 south sectional bracket, were scheduled to play seventh-seeded Wellesley (13-6-1) in the opening round on Monday at Babson Skating Center. The winner of that game would move on to the quarterfinals, where they would face either Duxbury (17-3-0) or the winner of a preliminary round game between Natick (9-8-2) and Archbishop Williams (8-9-1).
