Thank you to the Canton firemen
By Canton CitizenDear Editor:
We wanted to share our story of thanks with the citizens of Canton. Several weeks ago on a Monday evening at 10:30 p.m., our carbon monoxide detector started beeping. My husband got out of bed and said he was going to check the detector. He said he cleaned it out and then plugged it into the wall again. At 12 a.m., the carbon monoxide detector started beeping again. My husband got out of bed and said that maybe the detector was too close to the heat. He brought it up to the bathroom. At 1:30 a.m. the carbon monoxide detector beeped again. We said, “It is probably nothing,” and we opened a few windows. At 2:30 a.m. the carbon monoxide detector beeped again. “That’s it,” I said. “I’m calling the police.”
They told me to call the Fire Department. The fireman on the phone asked us a few questions and then said that someone would come to the house and check with their detector. At 3 a.m., we had the fire truck outside and three firemen in our house, and yes, their detector did register carbon monoxide. They immediately opened windows throughout the house. Then they called the gas company and the gas inspector from Canton.
Captain Beal and the men in Group 2 were knowledgeable, efficient, and kind. They made us feel safe. At 3:30 a.m., Mark Zade, the town’s plumbing and gas inspector, and a man from the gas company arrived and helped with detecting the carbon monoxide. They found that the heater was faulty. We shut off the heat. They all stayed with us until their monitor registered 0, and then they helped close all the windows. Thank you to Captain Beal, Group 2, Mark Zade, and the gas man.
I cannot believe how dumb we were. Thank you to the Canton Fire Department and the gas inspector. And we wanted to stress how important it is to have carbon monoxide detectors on all levels of the house (and not in the bathroom).
We are so happy to live in Canton.
Sincerely,
Lesley and Michael Shain
