McManus, Mary
By Canton CitizenIt is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary McManus, 97, who was called home on May 9, 2026. Mary is now reunited with the love of her life, Paul McManus, who predeceased her by only six weeks. Together, they shared a beautiful and steadfast marriage of 71 years.
Born and raised in West Roxbury, Mary was a graduate of the High School of Practical Arts. In her youth, she was known for her love of life and music, often found dancing the night away with friends at Mosley’s on the Charles.
Mary’s life was anchored by her love for her family and her faith. She took immense pride in her role as a mother and homemaker, creating a “happy place” for her family that reflected her keen sense of style and grace. Later, as her daughters headed to college, Mary brought her signature sense of order and care to Norwood Hospital, where she served as the unit secretary for the ICU.
A woman of service and community, Mary held leadership roles as the vice president of the Canton Garden Club and was an active member of both the Mashpee Women’s Club and the Mother of Twins Club. Upon moving to the Cape, she found great joy in volunteering at the Christ the King Church Thrift Shop.
A devout Catholic, Mary was a longtime parishioner and eucharistic minister of St. John the Evangelist in Canton and later Christ the King Parish in Mashpee. For many years, she and Paul served as mentors in the Pre-Cana Program at St. John’s, guiding countless couples toward the sacrament of marriage with wisdom and heart.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul, and their son, Paul John McManus. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her daughters, Susan and Mary McManus; her grandsons, Christopher (Elizabeth) McManus and Brendan McManus; and her cherished great-granddaughter, Lucy Grace. She is also survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Janet McManus.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, May 14 (today) from 4-7 p.m. at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 15, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Parish in Canton. Burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury.
