Hannington’s wins Eastern National Softball championship

By

On August 5, the Hannington’s of Canton over-55 softball team traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, to participate in the 2010 Eastern National Championships. On August 8 they came away with the championship trophy.

Along the way they compiled a 6-1 record, with their only loss coming in the finals against the Carolina Cobras 17-16 in extra innings, which prompted the “if” game. Hannington’s proceeded to muster a 21-8 victory, spearheaded by timely hitting and stellar defense. The turning point came in the fourth inning, when left fielder Andrew (Grit) Harmon threw out a runner at the plate attempting to score from second on a base hit.

Hannington’s has now earned a berth to the Tournament of Champions in Polk County, Florida, in February along with the opportunity to play for the USA National Championships in Phoenix, Arizona, against the West National Champions (Spot Bar and Grill, OR) in a one-game, winner take all at the World Championships in October.

The team’s roster features several players from Canton, including Michael Swinamer, who went 21 for 23 and led the team in hitting with a .913 batting average, pitcher Paul Casey, second baseman Dan Sides, first baseman John Gauvin, Mike DiFelice, Bob Petrucci, catcher Larry Moone, and outfielder Bill Curry (Canton Thunder), all from the EMass Senior Softball League. Third baseman Tim Veo of Wayland is another EMass leaguemate. Filling out the roster at the national championships were Ken Day, Dave (Capi) Cappizano, Mike Jiles, Paul Frigon, Fred Shields, Kevin Lipsett, Pat Gordon, and Glenn Wilbur.
