CHS alum receives Collegiate Apprentice Award

Canton resident Michael McMahon was recently presented with a Collegiate Apprentice Award at the Mechanics Hall 2019 Celebration of Excellence.

Michael McMahon CHS ’16

A 2016 graduate of Canton High School, McMahon is now a senior at Becker College, where he is captain of the baseball team and is pursuing a BS in Business Administration with a sports management concentration.

“I feel immensely humbled, privileged, and honored to have been named a recipient,” McMahon said. “At Becker College there are so many students who are doing tremendous things and making a large impact in the classroom, on campus, and in the community. To be selected out of such a great group is something that I take a large amount of pride in.”

The Mechanics Hall Collegiate Apprentice Award is given to one student from each of the colleges and universities in the Worcester region who demonstrate excellence in leadership, creativity and/or innovation, academic achievement, and community involvement.

McMahon meets all the criteria and more. He has a 4.0 GPA and has achieved dean’s list every semester of his college career. He has been named to multiple honor societies and received an impressive array of academic and athletic awards, including Becker College Freshman of the Year, Junior of the Year, and the baseball team’s Coaches Award, among others.

In addition, he has been very actively involved on campus, in the community, and beyond. He is the president of the Becker College Student Athlete Advisory Committee as well as a member of the National NCAA Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He has volunteered at Special Olympics events in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, and Indiana; worked as an athletic tutor on campus; and is an active member of both the “Love Your Melon Crew” and Business Club.

McMahon credits his parents and sister for his motivation, drive, and work ethic. He credits Becker College for channeling that motivation and helping him grow into the man he is today.

“Becker has given me the ability to grow as a student, athlete, leader, and person,” he said. “One of the biggest ways in which this happened is through the college’s encouragement to step outside of my comfort zone. I would never in my wildest dreams think that I would be accomplishing the things that I have so far.”

McMahon noted that he hopes his experiences and efforts at Becker will help to motivate others to get involved as much as they can.

“Many think a student-athlete cannot go out and be a leader not only in their respective sports, but also in the classroom or in the community,” he said. “I want to be an example for those that might not think that they can do everything they may be hoping to do. You can do (and succeed) in anything and everything you want to accomplish.”

He also has sage advice for anyone who is just starting out a Becker, or considering attending the college.

“Becker is a place that is welcoming and encouraging, truly allowing you to be yourself and find out who you are,” he said. “The college does an amazing job of opening doors for all of their students to succeed and thrive in an immense amount of ways. But it is up to you, the student, to decide how many of those doors you are going to walk through.”

McMahon expects to graduate this May and hopes to go on to graduate school to earn a master’s degree.

“I am sure that the skills and lessons I have learned through my four years at Becker will help me succeed in any road I chose to go down,” he said.
