Six injured, storefront damaged in multi-car crash

Six people were taken to the hospital and a downtown Canton storefront incurred significant damage as a result of a three-car accident on Wednesday morning, November 7. The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. in front of Paula’s Package Store, located at the corner of Washington and Mechanic streets. One of the vehicles struck the front of the store, damaging the building’s façade. Paramedics from the Norwood and Sharon fire departments assisted in transporting the accident victims to Norwood Hospital for evaluation. The town’s building and wiring inspectors were also called to the scene, and Paula’s Package Store was closed for the remainder of the day for repairs. Firefighters remained on scene until 10:30 a.m.

Water main break impacts schools, residences

A surprise water main break caused service disruptions for several hours in the area of the Galvin and Hansen schools, Blue Hill Country Club, and Algonquin neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, November 8. The break occurred around 1 p.m. and service was restored to residences around 3 p.m. and to the schools around 7:15 p.m. DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta said there was “no rhyme or reason” as to why the water main broke, noting that the pipe was not very old. Trotta said repairs to the Galvin Middle School driveway will begin next week and GMS students will walk from the Hansen to the Galvin until repairs are completed. Repair costs are estimated at approximately $4,000.

Police Department announces new K-9

The Canton Police Department recently announced the addition of its newest K-9, Riggs. A 1-year-old German Shepard, Riggs will soon enter the K-9 police academy for training, after which he will replace Bosco, who is retiring to the family of K-9 Officer Scott Brown. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the addition of Riggs was made possible thanks to some “generous” private donations.
