The top three scams that Americans receive most by phone, email, or regular mail are the following: 1.) Credit card offers that promise to greatly reduce your interest rate payment; 2.) Tech-support scams claiming your computer has a virus that only the caller can fix; and 3.) Travel schemes for which you must act right now to get a special vacation deal. Be on the lookout for these phony scams.

The Canton Historical Society will hold a yard sale on Tuesday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post 24 Hall, 950 Washington Street (behind Canton High School).

Sophomore wrestler Eddie Marinilli became the first Canton wrestler to ever win an all-state championship. He also won both the Division 2 central sectional and the Division 2 state tournaments. Eddie finished the season with an overall record of 42-5.

The Canton Traffic Study Committee and the Canton Blue Ribbon Traffic Committee have merged. The merger will increase input into traffic recommendations and formalize the review of citizen traffic complaints.

According to the Town Clerk’s office, in Canton, there are 4,796 registered Democrats; 1,814 registered Republicans; and 9,034 unenrolled/independent voters.

President Donald Trump received only 33 percent of the vote in the 2016 presidential contest in Massachusetts, which shows how liberal the state is today.

Many small taxi companies are going under due to the entry of Uber into the business.

The Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The 267-bed hospital serves an area covering 70 cities and towns, including the town of Canton.

There is a bill in the state legislature that will exempt drivers 70 and older from paying a toll on the Mass. Turnpike as well as the Callahan, Sumner, and Ted Williams tunnels.

On the subject of state legislators, they recently voted to override Governor Baker’s veto of the $18 million pay raise package given to legislators and state judges. It is interesting to note that voters are not allowed to collect signatures to put a question repealing the pay raises on the November 2018 ballot because the package included judicial pay hikes, which, under the Massachusetts Constitution, cannot be the subject of a repeal on the ballot.

The health conference room at the Canton Senior Center was named in memory of the late Betty Lethin, who served on the Canton Council on Aging board for 31 years.

The next revaluation of property in Canton is scheduled for fiscal year 2021.

According to DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta and as recently reported in the Citizen, the blizzard on Tuesday, March 13, netted as much as 22 inches of snow in certain parts of town as snowfall rates exceeded two inches per hour at the height of the storm. A total of 62 DPW staff members and private contractors were on the road for snow removal operations from 6 a.m. Tuesday to midday Wednesday. There were some downed trees, but at no time was a road or street fully blocked. The town budgeted $600,500 this year for snow and ice expenses and had spent $690,000 as of March 20. Selectmen have authorized deficit spending for snow and ice removal, and the balance will be addressed with a reserve fund transfer at the May town meeting.

Selectmen recently appointed Ryan Gurley as a new Canton firefighter.

Mansfield High School (26-2) defeated Hockomock League rival Franklin 67-54 to win the Division 1 boys basketball state championship. The Hockomock League, of which Canton High is a member, is one of the strongest leagues in the state.

The Foxboro High School girls basketball team won the Division 2 state final, beating Hopkinton 49-41. Foxboro, another Hockomock League member, made it to the championship game by beating Pentucket 58-54 in overtime. The team stormed back from a 20-point deficit in the state semifinals to win the game.

People achieve more as a result of working with others than against them.
