Concerns about child safety

By

To parents of school-age children in Canton:

Can anyone tell me why only two people — Barry Nectow, business administrator for the Canton Public Schools, and Stephen Connolly, operations manager at Michael J. Connolly & Sons bus company — have the final say in where school bus stops are located in Canton?

Seven weeks ago, my 12-year-old daughter and her 11-year-old friend were followed by a man after getting off the bus. This man drove by them three times in a 150-foot distance, slowing each time and turning around twice to drive past them. I have no idea what this person’s intentions were, but it was frightening to my daughter and her friend, and it was certainly frightening to me as a parent.

We live in a quiet neighborhood. There are no houses to walk by and no businesses — just about a quarter mile walk home with basically nothing around. My daughter’s bus stop is on Route 138. I’ve asked for the bus stop to be moved into where other buses come in to pick up the elementary school children. There is also a Stoughton bus that pulls in further. I’ve asked, bothered, even begged for this bus stop to be moved to where I believe it would be safer, but the two men who have the final say have refused.

I have reached out to many people who listened and showed their concern but politely explained to me that it’s out of their hands. Can anyone help me?

Sincerely,

Nancy J. Callahan
