Library announces Oscar movie series

By

The Canton Public Library is kicking off a new Oscar movie series this month, featuring weekly screenings of some of the films that were nominated for Academy Awards in 2017.

libraryThe series gets underway on Tuesday evening, September 12, with Lion, a biographical film starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman. Directed by Garth Davis, the film tells the true story of Saroo Brierley, who was lost as a child and reunites with his birth family in India 25 years later.

The series continues the following Tuesday with La La Land — the smash musical hit written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Nominated for a record-tying 14 Academy Awards and winner of six, the movie stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles.

Next in the series is Fences on Tuesday, September 26. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by August Wilson, the film stars Denzel Washington as a garbage collector in 1950s Pittsburgh named Troy Maxson and Oscar winner Viola Davis as Maxson’s wife, Rose. Bitter about his lot in life, Maxson frequently takes out his frustrations on his loved ones. (Rated PG-13)

Next on October 3 is the science fiction film Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Nominated for eight Oscars, the movie stars Amy Adams as a linguistics professor searching for a way to communicate with apparent alien visitors.

Lastly, on October 10, the series wraps up with a screening of Hacksaw Ridge (rated R), a World War II-centered film starring Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss, a pacifist combat medic who saved dozens of lives without using a weapon and was the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

All of the screenings will begin at 7 p.m. and will be shown on an HD projector to make the experience as cinematic as possible. Discussion will follow and refreshments will be served.

This year’s Academy Award-winning films, including Best Picture winner Moonlight, are now available to check out on DVD at the library. For full descriptions of the movies and the awards they’re nominated for, visit library.canton.ma.us.
