George C. Sykes, Sr., 97, of Canton, passed away February 25 at the Hellenic Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family.

Sykes, George copyBorn in Boston, he was raised in Dorchester and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School and Northeastern University. After graduation George worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Vermont and then went on to work at the Watertown Arsenal from 1940 to 1953, with time out for military service where he served in the Marine Corps in World War II in the South Pacific, fighting in the Battle of Okinawa. He went on to work as the facilities and plant manager for W.R. Grace for 31 years before retiring in 1984. George was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed working in his garden.

He was a resident of Canton for over 60 years where he was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church, the Canton Fish & Game Club, Knights of Columbus Council #2095, Canton Retired Men’s Club, and a volunteer for five years at the Canton Senior Center. He was also a member of the Canton Veterans Council, the American Legion Post #24 in Canton, and the Canton Funeral Honor Guard.

Beloved husband of the late Agnes F. (Skehan). Father of George C. Sykes, Jr. and his longtime friend Elaine Rizzo of FL, Stephen F. Sykes and his wife, Chris, of CA, Gerard J. Sykes of Brookline, Robert E. Sykes and his wife, Janet, of Canton, and Cathy Sykes of Hull. Also survived by seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday in St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton. Burial Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Donations may be made in his memory to the Canton Veterans Services Department, 801 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021, or to the Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 601 Sherman St., Canton, MA 02021.
