Man About Canton: Tax bills still climbing

The average tax bill for a single-family home in Canton will increase this year by $162, according to Bill Galvin, chairman of the Board of Assessors. The average assessed value of a single-family home has risen from $491,389 to $504,606, a 2.7 percent increase from last year. The average condominium assessment is $266,279, a 7.6 percent increase from last year, and the average tax bill for condos will rise by $242. Commercial and industrial assessments rose 3 percent over last year.

Last year, 42 new single-family homes were constructed while 24 new condos were also built in Canton.

The total taxable valuation of the town is $4.5 billion.

A Sonic drive-in restaurant recently opened in Stoughton at the site of the former Friendly’s restaurant. The new 2,300-square-foot restaurant has indoor seating for 32 people with nine drive-in stalls.

There are 384 economically disadvantaged students in the Canton Public Schools, according to Canton’s new school superintendent, Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller.

The CHS varsity field hockey team finished the recent reason with a record of 13-5-2. The girls placed second in the Davenport Division of the Hockomock League and outscored the opposition by a combined total of 54-14.

The town of Canton is in the process of developing the Paul Revere Heritage Park by adopting and rebuilding the Joseph Warner Revere Barn and the Paul Revere Copper Rolling Mill located on the grounds of the former Plymouth Rubber property on Revere Street.

The average car in the United States gets 24.8 miles per gallon of gasoline. Automakers are still on track to meet ambitious government standards requiring a fleet-wide average of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.

The Earl Newhouse Waterfront area along the Reservoir Pond behind the Williams Estate on Pleasant Street closed on December 15 for the winter and will reopen on Saturday, April 1.

Governor Charlie Baker vetoed 207 items in the 2016 session but was unable to sustain any of the 207 items as the House and Senate on Beacon Hill easily overrode all 207 vetoes.

According to the Energy Agency, 2.5 million U.S. homes still heat with wood and wood pellets.

According to the National Confectioners Association, a trade organization representing the $35 billion U.S. confections industry, Americans spent $2.7 billion on Halloween candy last year.

Out of the 32 football teams that competed in the first round of this year’s MIAA south sectional playoffs, 18 did not have a winning record. Seven teams from the Hockomock League made the playoffs, but only four of those teams had a winning record.

Canton-based moving company Humboldt Storage and Moving recently held its fifth annual Humboldt Truck Pull to benefit the Special Olympics of Massachusetts. This year, the event was held at the Irish Cultural Centre and raised over $14,000.

And finally, friends of the late Howie Darling celebrated his 70th birthday on December 31 with drinks at Big D’s Neponset Café. Howie, who passed away in November, was a real Canton townie and well liked by everyone.

When you say “I” and “my” too much, you lose the capacity to understand the “we” and “our.”
