Close losses point to improvements for CHS softball

Despite going winless through the first nine games, the CHS girls softball team has upped its level of play and appears to be knocking on the door of its first victory.

Last week, the lady Bulldogs were involved in two well-played and competitive losses to Hockomock League opponents — 3-2 to Stoughton and 4-2 to Sharon. The team also played Milford earlier in the week but were overmatched in an 11-0 defeat, limited to two hits by the Hawks’ standout pitcher Kelley Reichert.

Head coach Tracy Andrews said good pitching and greatly improved defense has led to better overall play. However, she said the team still needs to improve its overall production at the plate despite getting a few key hits last week.

The common denominator in both the Stoughton and Sharon games was the pitching of senior captain Sarah Reissfelder, who tossed two complete games. In the Stoughton game, the teams were tied 1-1 going into the fifth inning when Stoughton scored a pair of runs to take the lead. Canton got one back in the seventh to make it a one-run game but could not get any closer.

In addition to pitching well, Reissfelder also chipped in at the plate with an RBI single, while Gab Matthews hit a homerun in the game. Sophomore Hannah Jerrier also had two hits for the Bulldogs.

“It was a well played, good softball game,” said Andrews. “We played better defense in this game.”

The lady Bulldogs continued their good pitching and defense in the Sharon game; however, it was still not enough as the Eagles pulled ahead to win by two.

Reissfelder and senior Rachel Dooley knocked in runs for Canton with Dooley collecting two hits.

“We are showing signs of upward momentum,” noted Andrews. “The girls continue to play hard and I think they will see the benefits of their hard work.”

Andrews said the team has gotten important contributions from some of its younger players, including Jerrier, who has improved at the plate, and fellow sophomores Evelyn and Lillian Carrington and Molly Loughran, who have all played well defensively.

The lady Bulldogs were due to visit Attleboro on Tuesday and host Franklin on Wednesday, with another game scheduled for this Friday at Taunton. The team’s next home game is scheduled for Monday, May 9, against Foxboro starting at 3:45 p.m.
