Commentary: Canton not obeying the law

By

Dear Editor:

Your “Man About Canton” noted the proliferation of stop signs around town in his November 5 column. He failed to use the word “illegal.” Under Massachusetts law, every stop sign posted for traffic calming or to slow traffic is illegal. Every all-way stop not justified by a documented crash history (five crashes per year) or traffic counts showing long delays during rush hour is illegal.

Nuisance stop signs have been found to increase crash rates, but politicians treat them like candy for constituents. That’s why state rules are strict. Unfortunately, the state Department of Transportation and attorney general have not adequately enforced the law.

It’s also illegal to receive Chapter 90 aid while violating state sign rules. I wonder whose signature is on Canton’s request for money it is disqualified from receiving. While you’re looking at signs, you might also start comparing speed limit signs to the speed limits authorized by MassDOT. You may find quite a few illegal speed limits mixed in with the illegal stop signs.
