News Notes: Motorcyclist killed on High Street

By

A Yarmouthport man died Friday night at Boston Medical Center after his motorcycle left the roadway and hit a stonewall on High Street in Canton. The accident occurred around 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of High and Dolman streets.

Police identified the motorcyclist as 27-year-old William Donovan. Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury said EMTs had initially called for a MedFlight, but the service was not operating due to the foggy conditions. The victim was rushed instead by ambulance to Boston Medical Center.

Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said a State Police reconstruction team is still investigating the accident.

Also last week, an unidentified motorist was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton after colliding with a telephone pole on York Street and Waterman Drive. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16. Woodbury said the telephone pole broke into two parts, and Eversource and Verizon were called to replace it.

Firefighters respond to electrical, dumpster fires

A family was briefly evacuated from their Sherman Street home earlier this week after a small electrical fire broke out inside a wall outlet on Monday morning, September 21, around 5:30 a.m. Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury said the family awoke to the smell of smoke and contacted the Fire Department. The fire did not spread and the family was able to return to the home after an inspection by the town’s wiring inspector.

In other news, firefighters were called to extinguish a dumpster fire outside a commercial building at 30 North Street on Saturday, September 19, around 4 p.m. The fire was contained to the dumpster and did not expand to a nearby building.
