At approximately 7:15 a.m. on Saturday, February 28, a large portion of the roof at the Metropolis Skating Rink in Canton collapsed. A youth team from Norwood was practicing on the ice at the time; however, everyone was able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported. Members of both the Canton Police and Fire departments responded and were able to assist in evacuating and searching the building. State inspectors along with the Canton building commissioner also responded to the scene and an investigation is still ongoing.

A Canton Youth Hockey Learn-to-Skate jamboree, an end-of-season event for the organization’s youngest skaters, was scheduled to commence at 9 a.m., just hours after the collapse occurred.
