Boys swimmers open with historic win vs. Franklin

By

The CHS boys swim team won its first meet of the season last week, beating Franklin 92-74. According to head coach Lori Mooney, the meet was a huge win for the program. “We haven’t beaten Franklin in the seven years I’ve been a coach,” she said, “never mind sending boys to both sectionals and state championships.”

The boys 200 IM relay team of Diego Ferstler, Sean Mitchell, Sebastian Melendez, and Dan Nadeau qualified for both sectionals and states with a time of 1:51.45. The boys 400 freestyle relay also qualified for both postseason meets (3:43.44) behind Melendez, Nadeau, Ferstler, and Owen Guerini, while Melendez qualified for both individually in the 200 free (1:49.68) and 500 free (5.00.69).

On the girls’ side, Canton lost 107-63, but every race was “neck and neck,” according to Mooney. “It was an exciting meet with lots of successes,” she said.

The 200 IM relay team of Tiffany Ha, Amanda Walsh, Julia Guerini, and Kim Frazier placed first and qualified for sectionals and states with a time of 2:04.46. This same unit also qualified for sectionals and states in the 200 free relay in 1:53.64.

Ha qualified in both the 200 IM (2:26.09) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.62), and Walsh qualified for the sectionals in the 500 free with a time of 5:57.23.

Captains for the girls team are Guerini and Frazier, and captains for the boys team are Kevin Wing and Steven Hellmuth. Last year the girls won four meets while the boys won three.

The next meet for both teams is tomorrow against Taunton at 3:30 p.m. at the Blue Hills swimming pool.
