Stoughton’s Nick Pirelli named assistant rec. director

Out of 120 applicants, the town of Canton has selected Nick Pirelli as its new assistant recreation director to help the department with programing and special events. This position, along with a town planner and a human resources assistant, were added to the operating budget at the 2014 annual town meeting.

Recreation Director Janet Maguire said Pirelli is a “highly driven individual.” Maguire said he is a certified park and recreation professional and is a candidate to become a certified park and recreation executive with the National Recreation and Park Association.

A resident of Stoughton, Pirelli has served as recreation director at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology and community partnerships coordinator at Bridgewater State University. He has also worked with the Stoughton Youth Commission and previously served as the director of facilities management at Roxbury Community College. He has certifications in first aid, CPR, psychological first aid, and small craft safety.

“Without a doubt he has the skills and desire to take our departmental programming and special events to the next level,” Maguire said at Tuesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting.

The search committee for this position included Maguire, Jody Middleton, town human resources administrator; Dennis Aldrich, Recreation Department maintenance supervisor; Stacey Gorman, Recreation Commission member; and parent Moira Sweetland. All agreed with the appointment, including Town Administrator Bill Friel.

Friel said the town planner position has been advertised and eight candidates have applied. The applicants will be interviewed with the goal of bringing the planner on board after January 1.
