State imposes restriction on outdoor water use

By

The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is requiring Canton and other communities serviced by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) to prohibit non-essential outdoor water use between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. through October 1. Handheld hoses are still permitted during this period.

Selectmen Chairman Victor Del Vecchio said the water restriction comes because of the summer’s dry conditions.

According to DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta, the daytime restriction helps the town’s water system meet peak summertime demand. Because of the town’s past successful water conservation efforts, the restriction only limits non-essential, daytime outdoor use.

Under the state guidelines, examples of non-essential water use include irrigation of lawns via sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems; washing of vehicles, except in a commercial car wash; and washing of exterior building surfaces, driveways, sidewalks or parking areas.

Examples of acceptable outdoor water use include irrigation for a new lawn; handheld hoses for lawns, gardens, flowers and plants; and core functions of a business.

In other major news, selectmen, by virtue of a 3-0 vote, decided to award a new all-alcohol license to Waterfall Bar & Grill, which will be opening at 2 Forge Pond, the site of the vacated Centerfield’s restaurant. Other full liquor license applicants were Bertucci’s, 95 Washington Street, and Mai Place, 323 Turnpike Street.

Del Vecchio and selectmen John Connolly and Avril Elkort agreed that they wanted to continue the downtown revitalization effort while noting that the town had not received any meals taxes from the property in two years. All three selectmen agreed that Bertucci’s and Mai Place were good applicants and invited them to return when other full liquor licenses become available. Both establishments have beer and wine licenses.
