Canton A’s kick off promising season with win

By

Canton A’s head coach Kee Arguimbau is optimistic that his team will be as good if not better than last year with the return of several top veterans and the addition of some talented newcomers.

The team already has its first Cranberry League win after beating Rockland 8-1 in the season opener. Last year, the A’s finished 16-10 and won one game in the regional playoffs.

The league is made up of college players and others who have competed for their college teams. There are no Canton players on the team, but the A’s have added Dave Roberto of Sharon, who played for the Canton American Legion team last summer, Anthony Perriello of Norwood, who plays for UMass Amherst, and Mike Daryski of Walpole. There are also players from Curry College in Milton.

The team’s general manager is longtime Canton Recreation Commissioner Cab Devoll and the assistant coach is Canton native Bob Gibson Jr.

Returning from last year’s team are key pitchers Jared Clement and Zach Walker. Roberto is also expected to be a starting pitcher as is newcomer Jake Connolly from Colby College. Other returning veterans include Andrew Vandini (Amherst College), Steve Delanian, Joe Belmosto, and catcher Chris Nadeau. Arguimbau is also high on new outfielders Travis Ritchie (Massasoit) and Bridgewater State players Ryan Manning and Billy Mitchell.

In the 8-1 win over Rockland, Clement pitched six innings and gave up one earned run. Delanian hit a triple and Ritchie, Perriello, and Manning had several hits.

The Cranberry League is made up of nine south shore teams, including two newcomers: Acushnet and Whitman.

The A’s play their home games at CHS. The team was due to host Brockton on Tuesday and will travel to Quincy tonight for a 6 p.m. game. The squad will then head to Acushnet for a Sunday doubleheader and will host Kingston next Tuesday, June 10, at 6 p.m.
