The Canton High golf team started its season on a high note, beating Stoughton at home last week 166-202. The Bulldogs have set high expectations for themselves this year as they look to repeat as league champions and qualify for the south sectional tournament.

Head coach Jim Spillane described the victory over the Black Knights as a good opening performance for his squad, which has set a goal of winning every home match at the Blue Hill Country Club.

The Bulldogs are also hoping to lower their team score to 160 or better, which equates to an average of 40 or lower for the top four golfers. Par for the nine-hole Challenger Course at BHCC is 35.

Junior Sam Riemer had the lowest score of the day with a 40, coming back from a first-hole triple bogey to finish two over for the remaining eight holes.

The second lowest scorer was junior Brian Brooks, who finished with a 41, followed by senior JC Marcone with a 42 and senior Rich Nee with a 43.

The Bulldogs are coming off a successful 2011 season in which they went 8-5, won the league championship match, and finished fifth among the 16 schools that qualified for south sectionals. Riemer, a sophomore last year, reached the state individual finals, finishing 41st out of 115 participants, and is considered one of the league’s most talented golfers.

A total of 28 golfers tried out for this year’s team, with 20 being selected, including 14 who were on the team last season. Captains this year are Marcone, Nee, and Gavin Monagle.

Other team members listed by Spillane among the top eight golfers are junior Sam Hrubeck and sophomores Mike Breviglia, Brian Halloran, and Phil Pennachio.

“If we are playing well, particularly at home, we will be tough to beat,” said Spillane.

Canton was due to host Sharon on Wednesday, September 12, and will travel to Stoughton on September 19.
