Joseph T. Mellon Jr., 75, of Berkley, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, surrounded by his sons and family, after living a full and colorful life.

Born in Boston, Joe spent his early years in Connecticut before settling in Canton, where he lived most of his life and built lasting friendships. A proud 1968 graduate of Canton High School, he attended the University of Tampa before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Throughout his career, Joe worked in accounting and automotive paint sales. For several years, he proudly worked alongside his father, Joseph T. Mellon Sr., helping manage the family business, Mellon and Son, in Canton.

One of Joe’s proudest accomplishments was his unwavering commitment to sobriety. As a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he found purpose not only in his own recovery but in helping others along the way. He treasured the lifelong friendships he made through the program, especially the guidance of his sponsor, John, and the opportunity to sponsor and mentor others. In June, Joe celebrated an extraordinary milestone — 30 years of sobriety. Receiving his 30-year medallion was a moment of immense pride, and his joy and gratitude were evident.

Joe adored and is survived by his three sons: Ryan and his partner, Paula, of East Bridgewater; Scott and his wife, Denise, of Taunton; and Joe and his wife, Julia, of Canton. He is also survived by his sister Karen Mellon Gavigan and her husband, Joseph “Jay” Gavigan, of Berkley and brother-in-law John McDermott and his wife, Joanne Walsh. He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Joseph and Georgia Mellon, and his younger sister Maryann McDermott.

Nothing brought Joe greater happiness than spending time with his four grandchildren, Paul, Peter, John and Josephine Mellon. Whether he was sitting in the bleachers cheering them on, making a visit whenever he could, or proudly supporting the Canton Bulldogs, he treasured every opportunity to be part of their lives. He was also deeply loved by his many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, extended family, and true to Joe’s form, even his former wives. Family meant the world.

Joe will be remembered for his generous spirit and willingness to help others. His legacy lives on in those who loved him, laughed with him (probably through an email chain), and were fortunate enough to know him.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date.
