CHS girls join ‘rarified air’ with 5 golds, 1st state crown

CHS girls track team members and their coaches pose with the state championship trophy after Sunday’s D3 meet.
The mood was ecstatic on the bus ride home from Merrimack College on Sunday as the CHS girls track team soaked in the feeling of being crowned Division 3 state champions — the latest in a string of unprecedented achievements for this year’s group.
The first-place finish was made possible by a staggering five individual gold medals, three of which were won by junior Lauren Raffetto, who claimed the top spot in the 800 meters, mile run, and the 4×400 relay along with Addy Azar, Chloe Dubuisson and Grace Martinek.
The two other golds were won by Dubuisson in the 400 hurdles and Azar in the two-mile, and both girls were in the mix for another one, with Dubuisson instead settling for silver in the 100 hurdles and Azar nabbing bronze in the mile.
“This is absolutely remarkable,” CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson said of the Bulldogs’ medal haul at states, noting that the five individual titles puts them in “rarified air.”
“They have done all that has been asked of them and more,” added veteran girls track coach Anna Amico. “Each of them works hard and pushes themselves and their teammates to be their very best. I also couldn’t be prouder of who they are both on and off track. Their selflessness, belief in one another, and commitment to something bigger than themselves is what made this championship possible.”
Amico said the championship was a total-team effort, involving contributions from every event group. “In the final event of the day, the members of the 4×400 relay knew they needed to win to secure the state championship, but you would never have known the pressure they were under by the way they carried themselves before that race,” she said. “They were calm, confident in each other, and ready to solidify history.”
The girls went on to win the event in dominant fashion, besting the runner-up team from Stoughton by more than eight seconds with a time of 4:02.10. “These four athletes have been huge contributors all season long,” Amico said. “They have carried much pressure and delivered for their team time and time again. They compete with heart, grit, and a competitive fire that is special.”
Also stepping up for Canton at the state meet were sophomores Aida Sfeir and Nyomi Faulk, who both placed inside the top 10 in two different events. Sfeir was one of three Bulldogs to compete in the triple jump and led the way with a fourth-place finish, and she just missed the podium in the long jump, placing ninth overall.
Faulk, meanwhile, made her mark in the throwing events, finishing eighth in the shot put with a new personal-best mark (32’11.75”) to go along with a 10th-place finish in the discus.
Also reaching the podium were the 4×800 relay team of Lexi Piazza, Elena Silva, Maddie Driscoll and Izzy Holland, who placed seventh with a new season-best time, and sophomore Laurisa Sindor, who surprised many with her seventh-place finish in the triple jump (35’2” PR).
Other performers for Canton included Martinek in the 400m (10th); the 4×100 relay team of Natalia Mallei, Martinek, Sindor and Sfeir (11th); Holland in the two-mile (13th); Naya Sokkar in the triple jump (15th); Piazza in the two-mile (23rd PR); Mallei in the 100 hurdles (16th) and 400 hurdles (20th); and Driscoll in the 400 hurdles (27th).
This week, Canton’s top medalists will be back at Merrimack to compete in the Meet of Champions, headlined by the 4×400 relay, which is ranked third on the performance list behind only Duxbury and Central Catholic.
