Library Trustee Betty Chelmow not seeking reelection
By Canton CitizenAfter more than four decades of combined service, veteran Library Trustee Betty Chelmow has announced that she will not seek another term in the April 2026 town election.
First elected to the Library Board of Trustees in 1977, Chelmow served for 13 consecutive terms, including serving as chair during the previous renovation of the library (completed in 2003). In 2020, with the town navigating the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Chelmow returned to the board as a write-in candidate and was subsequently reelected for another three years in a hotly contested race in 2023.
“It has been a privilege to serve these many years with many directors of the library, Friends of the Canton Public Library, and most of all, an incredibly dedicated staff,” said Chelmow. “I have served with a talented group of trustees interested in meeting the needs of the town of Canton. Most of all, I am incredibly thankful for the support I have received from the town.”
“I have participated in every construction project since 1977, often as chair of the Board of Trustees, and each project was geared to meeting the growing needs of the Canton community,” she added. “Our current project, the ‘Next Chapter’ initiative, is geared to meeting the future needs of the town of Canton. Please join me and once again support the Next Chapter at Annual Town Meeting.
“Thank you again for all your support these many years.”
