Unbeaten CHS field hockey earns 2 tough draws

In two more highly anticipated showdowns against a couple of the region’s strongest opponents, the Canton High varsity field hockey team once again demonstrated its bona fides as a legitimate state title contender.

While they didn’t come away with a victory in either contest, the Bulldogs battled both Moses Brown — a former state champion from Rhode Island — and Hockomock foe Franklin to a hard-earned draw.

Hosting Moses Brown last Thursday and decked out in pink for breast cancer awareness, the Canton girls went toe to toe with the visitors from the first whistle to the last, finishing with a 2-2 tie behind another dominant outing from junior Shannon Lane.

Lane, who has already committed to play field hockey at Providence College after she finishes high school, now has a league-leading 29 goals on the season while ranking second in the Hockomock League with 14 assists.

In Monday’s rematch against the Franklin Panthers — currently the third ranked team in all of Division 1 — it was another defensive battle as the two heavyweights again played each other to a scoreless draw.

Despite the lack of scoring, the game proved to be another thriller, with Franklin controlling the action in the opening half and Canton returning the favor in an action-packed second half.

Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities in the contest, combining for 17 penalty corners. But neither goalkeeper relented, with Canton’s Shealyn Murphy racking up a game-high 15 saves in one of the finest performances of her career.

Junior defender Grace Martinek also continued her strong run of performances, while classmate Cassidy Lyons made her impact felt on both sides of the field.

With the two draws, the Bulldogs are now 11-0-3 on the season and have run away with the Davenport Division title, besting second-place Foxboro — who they defeated last week 4-0 — by more than three wins.

As of Tuesday, the Canton girls ranked fourth overall in Division 2 according to the MIAA power rankings, and their tough stretch of opponents only continues with a home matchup set for Thursday (today) against Walpole, the top ranked team in all of Division 1, followed by a road game Friday against another D1 playoff team in Brookline.

Canton will then wrap up the regular season with two more games next week against nonleague Norwood (D2 No. 14) and Dover-Sherborn (D3 No. 3).
