Neponset Fall Cleanup
By Canton CitizenOn Saturday, September 27, approximately 300 volunteers spread out across 14 different locations in Canton, Norwood, Walpole, Milton, Quincy, and various Boston neighborhoods to help clean up trash and debris along the Neponset River, its estuary, tributaries, and surrounding parks.
Managed by dedicated site captains and community members, the volunteers removed over 150 bags of trash. Some notable finds included 42 car tires, 75 feet of electrical cable, 30 feet of drainage pipe, assorted car parts, construction materials, shopping carts, office chairs, and hundreds of plastic bottles, bottle caps, nip bottles, wrappers, and straws.
“The Neponset River was literally my backyard and was heaven for a youngster,” said Jim McEachern, a cleanup volunteer at the Neponset Landing site. “I like to say I grew up like Tom Sawyer, with outdoor adventures and activities like swimming, fishing, making rafts, and floating down the river. It did my heart and soul good to be back there today with many good, caring people!”
NepRWA would like to thank this year’s cleanup sponsors, ENE Systems, Synergy/Neponset Landing, Barletta, and GZA GeoEnvironmental, as well as its dedicated community partners, Mass. Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR), Neponset River Greenway Council, Milton and Walpole DPWs, Greater Boston Trout Unlimited, Walpole Town Forest Committee, Pollo Campero, Friends of the Boston Harborwalk, Edgewater Neighborhood Association, and Empowering People for Inclusive Communities (EPIC).
