Carleton, John D.

By

John David Carleton, 87, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong learner, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, due to Parkinson’s disease.

Born on December 23, 1937, he was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Daniel Carleton and Delia “Mary” Carleton of Boston, his brothers James and Richard, and nephew Liam.

John was raised with strong values of service, integrity, and curiosity. He graduated from Boston English High School and went on to attend Northeastern University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in English journalism — a fitting field for a man who loved language, thoughtful conversation, and staying informed.

After college, John answered the call to serve his country and attended Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, later serving with distinction as a U.S. Navy officer. His military service instilled in him a lifelong sense of honor, responsibility, and quiet leadership that defined his approach to life and family. While serving as a Navy recruiter in Boston, he also earned his MBA at Boston University.

Following his military service, John was employed for many years at GTE Sylvania, where he served as director of human resources. Known for his steady professionalism and people-first approach, he took great pride in guiding others and fostering a positive workplace environment.

Outside of work, John had a deep appreciation for the simple, meaningful parts of life. He was an avid reader, a skilled handyman who could fix just about anything, and an enthusiastic fisherman who found peace by the water. He was easy to talk to, a kind and gentle soul who made people feel comfortable. John especially cherished family gatherings, which often included he and his wife, Fran, hosting holiday dinners at their home and barbecues in their backyard. He loved catching up on everyone’s lives, engaging in thoughtful discussions about current events, and regaling those around him with stories from his Navy life. His children remember him as a constant source of wisdom and encouragement, always ready with a kind word and sound advice.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Fran Carleton; his daughter Ellen Anziano and her husband, Steven; and his sons Daniel Carleton, Peter Carleton and his wife, Carol, and Thomas Carleton and his wife, Julie. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Jessica and Melissa Carleton, Alicia Sjahfiedin and her husband, Troy, and Stephanie Anziano. He is also survived by three nieces and two nephews.

He will be remembered as a man of character, intellect, humility, and enduring love for his family.
