Pedestrian, driver injured in downtown accident
By Mike BergerOutgoing Police Chief Helena Rafferty said a Saturday afternoon pedestrian accident in downtown Canton is under investigation by the Mass. State Police accident reconstruction unit.
Rafferty said a female resident was struck by non-resident male operator and both were transported to area hospitals. The accident was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, near 671 Washington Street.
Police and Fire vehicles, including two ambulances and the CFD Blood Transfusion truck, responded to the scene, and that section of Washington Street (from Revere to Sherman streets) was shut down for an extended period of time.
CFD reminds residents that fireworks are illegal
The Canton Fire Department has put out a public reminder that recreational use of fireworks is illegal in Massachusetts.
According to the state Department of Fire Services, there have been more than 550 fires and explosions involving illegal fireworks in Massachusetts in the past five years. Six firefighters were injured in these incidents, and damages were estimated at nearly $1 million. Between 2019 and 2023, Massachusetts medical facilities treated more than 200 people for burns and other injuries associated with fireworks, including two dozen people who received severe burns covering more than 5 percent of their body.
The possession, use and sale of fireworks without a professional license is against the law in Massachusetts and punishable by confiscation, fine or imprisonment. Fines range from $100 to $1,000, and some violations could carry a one-year prison sentence …
