The CHS girls outdoor track team earned an impressive team victory over perennial league power Oliver Ames last week, winning 77-59 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
“It was a total team effort,” said head coach Anna Amico. “Each athlete competed hard and did what was needed. The energy and determination were inspiring to witness.”
The win keeps the team’s hopes for a Davenport Division title alive. If Canton beats Mansfield on Tuesday and OA beats North Attleboro, then the Bulldogs would finish in a tie for first place. It would mark the Canton girls’ first outdoor track league title since 1984.
In last week’s dual-meet win against OA, Chloe Dubuisson led the way with a school-record-setting performance in the 200 meters (25.8 seconds) to go along with wins in both the 100-meter hurdles and high jump.
In the 400 hurdles, Sally Hoban took the top spot, followed by teammates Lily Duong and Natalia Mallei, who placed second and third, respectively. Hoban also led sweeps of both the shot put, along with Nyomi Faulk and Sophie Regan, and the javelin, along with Dubuisson and Jasmine Findlen.
Other wins were earned by Lauren Raffetto in the 800m, Grace Martinek in the triple jump, Isanayah Rene, Alyssa Wong, Maggie Thiboutot and Aida Sfeir in the 4×100 relay, and Addy Azar, Isabella Holland, Hoban and Raffetto in the 4×400.
Regan and Faulk also finished nos. 2 and 3 in the discus, while Saadatu Sambo and Martinek had runner-up finishes in the high jump and long jump, respectively.
The team’s underclassmen also traveled to OA on Saturday to compete in the MSTCA Freshmen-Sophomore meet. Martinek was the top finisher for the Canton girls, placing fifth in the 200m, eighth in the triple jump, and ninth in the long jump. Also making their mark was the 4×800 relay team of Sofia Anastasiou, Elena Silva, Isabella Holland and Raffetto, who placed fourth overall in a very competitive field.
Other notable performers included Raffetto in the mile (7th), Regan (11th) and Faulk (12th) in the shot put, and Sfeir in the triple jump (13th) and long jump (19th). Also turning in strong finishes were the 4×400 relay team of Katherine Dervan, Emma Duong, Norah Francois and Natalia Mallei, who finished 15th, and the 4×100 team of Rene, Sfeir, Francois and Laurisa Sindor, who placed 19th.
In other team news, Dubuisson and Hoban traveled to North Andover during April vacation week to compete in the state pentathlon, and both girls made the Bulldogs proud, finishing ninth and 20th overall, respectively. Amico said both athletes showcased their versatility and ability to compete at a high level in a variety of events, with Dubuisson posting the fourth-best 100 hurdle time and shot-put throw of the day and Hoban placing third overall in the shot put. The two Bulldog stars currently own the top two pentathlon scores in program history.
