Curry College rugby honors the late Anthony Maffie
By Canton CitizenThe spirit of Anthony Maffie was alive and well on the Curry College rugby pitch two weekends ago as the Colonels hosted the “Battle of the Blue Hills,” a full-day tournament featuring 12 men’s and eight women’s college rugby teams.
The event included both pool play and a playoff, with the tournament champion being awarded the Anthony Maffie Memorial Cup in memory of its namesake — a former Curry rugby player and CHS grad who passed away in 2019 at age 22.
The tournament also featured refreshments, raffles and vendors, with all proceeds going to the Epilepsy Foundation of New England in Maffie’s honor.
“Maf, Ant, Jr, Muffin are just a few ways we knew him as teammates,” noted Curry RFC in a recent social media post. “He was also an incredibly dedicated nursing student, brother, son, and an amazing friend.”
On hand for the action were Anthony’s parents, Bob and Lisa Maffie of Canton, who were proud to present this year’s Anthony Maffie Cup to the Bryant University Bulldogs, who defeated Wesleyan University in the men’s tournament finals. On the women’s side, the Colby Mules emerged as the winners from a competitive eight team-field.
“Pitch-side, the vibes were immaculate … and it was incredible to see everyone come out and support each other,” noted Curry RFC. “Thanks to all the teams that showed and competed, and congrats to the winners!”
