Longtime civic leader and library advocate George T. Comeau, Esq. has announced his candidacy for re-election as a member of the Canton Public Library’s Board of Trustees, pledging to continue his decades-long commitment to strengthening one of Canton’s most vital civic institutions.
Comeau, a lifelong Canton resident, has served as a library trustee since 1999 and has served as chair of the board. During his tenure, he has advocated for the library as a cornerstone of community life — an open and welcoming place where residents of all ages can access knowledge, technology, culture, and ideas.
“In every community, the public library stands as one of the clearest expressions of democracy,” Comeau said in announcing his campaign. “It is a place where knowledge is free, curiosity is encouraged, and every resident has the opportunity to learn and grow. I am running for re-election because I believe deeply in protecting and strengthening this institution for the next generation.”
Comeau’s dedication to libraries extends beyond Canton. He currently serves as a commissioner of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the statewide agency responsible for supporting public libraries across the commonwealth. He was first appointed to the board in 2004 and has been reappointed by multiple governors, including most recently in 2023.
Over the course of his career, Comeau has combined professional expertise with public service. An attorney and marketing professional, he works as the senior manager of destination events for the Downtown Boston Alliance. Comeau works on major events including World Cup, Boston Harborfest, First Night, the Boston Marathon, July 4th, and Sail Boston as well as countless destination events that take place within Downtown Boston. His background in communications, nonprofit leadership, governance, and fundraising has informed his work as a trustee and advocate for public libraries.
Beyond library service, Comeau has been a visible advocate for Canton’s history and civic life. He serves as president and curator of the Canton Historical Society and is a member of the Canton Historical Commission. Over the years, he has been involved in numerous preservation initiatives and community projects, including efforts to protect historic sites and promote local heritage. Comeau is a columnist for the Canton Citizen and has written hundreds of stories that illuminate local history and place Canton in the context of national and international events.
Comeau said his priorities for the next term include continuing efforts to strengthen the library’s facilities, ensuring the building remains safe and sustainable, and supporting innovative programming that keeps the library relevant in an evolving digital age.
“Our library is more than shelves of books,” Comeau said. “It is a gathering place, a classroom, a cultural center, and a beacon of opportunity. The work ahead is about ensuring the Canton Public Library continues to thrive as a place where ideas meet, neighbors connect, and the future begins.”
Comeau encouraged Canton voters to participate in the upcoming town election and support his re-election.
“It has been one of the great honors of my life to serve the people of Canton,” he said. “I humbly ask for your vote so that I may continue this work on behalf of our library and our community.”
