Canton’s new police chief to be sworn in Feb. 17
By Mike BergerNewly hired Police Chief Michael K. Daniels is expected to sign his three-year contract with the town of Canton at the Select Board’s next meeting on Tuesday evening, February 17. Daniels will be sworn in at the meeting and will officially assume command of the CPD the following day on Wednesday, February 18.
Town Administrator Charles Doody said the terms of the agreement will not be disclosed until Daniels signs the contract.
Doody did note that Daniels has successfully passed all background checks, including both physical and psychological checks.
Daniels, who previously served as chief of police in the town of Oxford, will be taking over for Joseph Perkins, who was appointed to lead the department on an interim basis following the retirement of former chief Helena Rafferty last summer.
Prior to his appointment as Oxford’s chief in 2023, Daniels served as a sergeant and later a lieutenant in the Westborough Police Department, where he managed community engagement, public information, internal affairs, procurement strategy, animal control, and the public safety communications center. During his interview with the Select Board, he assured board members that he knew how to steady an organization, set high standards, and guide the department through reform.
In other news, Doody announced that applications for the position of Canton fire chief are due on Friday, February 13. Any applications received by that date will be forwarded to the town’s consultant, Parow Consulting & Associates, who will then begin the screening process with the goal of narrowing down the field to a few finalists for the Select Board to interview …
