Canton’s annual town election set for Tuesday, April 4

By

Tuesday, April 4 is decision day for Canton voters as they head to the polls to settle contested races for Select Board, School Committee and Library Board of Trustees.

Citizen Managing Editor Jay Turner speaks with Select Board candidates during a recent CCTV forum.

Officially, voting began on March 25 with both in-person and vote-by-mail options for anyone preferring to cast their ballot early. For all others, polls will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rodman Building for precincts 1 and 6, the Canton Senior Center for precincts 2 and 7, Blue Hills Regional School for precinct 3, and John F. Kennedy School for precincts 4 and 5.

In this year’s race for Select Board, two seats are up for grabs with incumbent Lisa Lopez running for a second three-year term alongside first-time candidates John McCourt, a current member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and Playground & Recreation Commission, and Chris Albert, longtime owner of D&E Pizza and Subs. Chris Connolly, the other Select Board incumbent whose term expires this year, opted not to run again after serving for two consecutive terms.

It is a similar story in the race for Canton School Committee, where one incumbent, Nichola Gallagher, is stepping down while a second incumbent, Laura Arboleda, is seeking reelection in a race that also features two first-time candidates, Kim McCourt and Rachael Wallace.

Also being contested this year are three expiring seats on the Library Board of Trustees, where another two first-time candidates, John “Jay” Foley and Mindy Milman, have stepped up to challenge the three incumbents, Betty Chelmow, Susan Cogliano and George Comeau.

The remaining offices on the 2023 ballot will be filled by incumbents running unopposed. They include Gene Manning (Board of Assessors), Dr. Julie Goodman (Board of Health), Patricia McDermott (Planning Board), and Adam Brothers (Housing Authority).

A Q&A with the candidates in the three contested races was published in last week’s Citizen and has been posted at thecantoncitizen.com. A panel discussion with the candidates, co-hosted by the Citizen and Canton Community TV, has been airing on local cable access and can be viewed online by visiting cantoncommunitytv.org.
